Sparrow Update Allows Users To Open Links Directly In Chrome

Sparrow for iPhone, everyone’s favorite email client, has received an update today, despite the fact that the company claimed the app would not gain any new features. The latest version gains the ability to open links in the Chrome browser as well as Safari — a feature that will get heavy use around these parts — in addition to improved IMAP compatibility, better avatar support, and miscellaneous bug fixes. Google was the first company to follow its own guidelines for adding the Chrome integration to iOS apps with a recent update to the Google+ app, and given that the company behind Sparrow was recently purchased by Google, the new Chrome integration doesn’t come as a huge surprise.

I would really love if it other app developers also start integrating multi-browser options in them. Yes I know we can always use BrowserChooser to do so but, having it native in the app just gives a nice feel.

Here is the complete change log:

  • Webpages can be opened in Chrome
  • Improved IMAP compatibility
  • Improved avatars behavior
  • Various bugfixes

That is all there is to this update of Sparrow.

Review: LaunchSpeak

LaunchSpeak is a new Cydia tweak that allows you to input your own custom text that you want your iDevice to speak when you launch an application from the Homescreen.

Apart from changing the text, you also have the ability to toggle the tweak on and off, which is a good tool to have just in case you are in a location where you need to be quiet and don’t want your phone to be speaking constantly while you use it.The tweak requires you to respring every time you change the text from the text input box in the settings panel that the tweak adds.

You won’t be seeing a video review of the tweak by me since I’m having issues with it. But if you are interested then you can go ahead and install LaunchSpeak for free from Cydia under the ModMyi repo.

Did it work for you?

HackStore – Cydia For Mac

Since a long time we have been hearing rumors about Cydia for Mac and now finally it has been released calling itself the HackStore.

Before I continue enlightening you about the HackStore, there is something I like about it and that is its motto, “No Piracy Apps Here Forever And Ever”. The piracy issue has been driving everyone crazy, Cydia has many pirate  re which provide all the paid tweaks/themes for free and just pour water on all the hard work done by the dev. If the HackStore can prevent this then it will surely be a good place for Mac OS developers to upload their apps.

Here’s what the developers behind HackStore have to say about their new application:

This program for us is the epitome of Cydia for iOS, but on a Mac OS. This means that in our app will be applications and tweaks for Mac OS, which is not in the Mac AppStore, or for any reason they have not posted there.

The biggest Mac Appstore problem is that they limit their users in everything, without giving an opportunity to expand these limits. This is not correct, because  ONLY users should decide which applications they should install and which one do not.

We think, HackStore, it is a break through the narrow confines of Mac Appstore. A lot of good applications should be created and promoted but if they will never come to AppStore they will be not popular at all, so we have created HackStore!

The motto of our application - «No piracy apps here, forever and ever», so the cracked and piracy apps I am the HackStore application developer. This program for me is the epitome of Cydia for iOS, but on a Mac OS. This means that in our app will be applications and tweaks for Mac OS, which is not in the Mac AppStore, or for any reason they have not posted there.

HackStore seems to have copied the user interface of the Mac App Store, so you won’t take much trouble using the app.

Now you must be wondering “Was Saurik the one who created the HackStore?”

Well here is what he has to say about it:

NO: if I were to release something, it would definitely be called “Cydia”. ;P To me, there is no reason to build something that Bodega easily services (you can even find jailbreaking tools, such as Seas0nPass in Bodega): the only thing that makes Cydia interesting is Substrate, so until and unless Substrate works on Mac you won’t see me spending time building a simple installer tool.

It is still early days for the HackStore as there are currently only 50+ apps in the Mac App Store. But it seems like a nice place for jailbreakers to download the latest jailbreak tools such as TinyUmbrella, ipswDownloader, iExplorer etc.

It looks like it has already generated quite a bit of interest as the HackStore was down at the time of publishing this post, so don’t be surprised if you see a grey screen after you launch the app. The developers are trying to fix the issue.

You can download the HackStore using this link.

Review: AppMosaic

AppMosaic is a jailbreak app which actually should not have been one but that does not really matter.

AppMosaic is a simple jaibreak app which shows you the top 200 AppStore applications in a nice mosaic style. Once you open the app it will tell you that the apps to the right are the free ones and the ones to the left are the paid ones. After a few seconds of loading you will see the AppStore app icons appearing in a simple mosaic.

If you tap on any icon it will show a pop-up in the bottom of the screen giving the name of the app and the name of the developer, tapping on this pop-up you will be directed to the particular app in the AppStore.

Check out AppMosaic in action below:

It is a pretty cool app if you want to keep an eye on all the top apps in the AppStore. If you are interested in AppMosaic you can get it from Cydia for free.

Let me know what you guys think of AppMosaic in the comments section below.

Tutorial on How To Sync Dropbox and iCloud….

According to TJ Luoma’s report in TUAW, the Mac and iOS users are going to be faced with the problem of choosing between storing their documents in iCloud and Dropbox even though it is known that both have different purpose to serve. Apple as Luoma states is definitely going to add features every now and then to the iCloud so that people opt for it and to make the iCloud easier to win the support of the developers.

Luoma says that he would rather trust Dropbox than iCloud although iCloud is quite good. The reason is that one can sync iCloud with Dropbox but it’s a one-way sync only and of course a simple one too.

How to Sync iCloud With Dropbox

  • To begin with the syncing, you need to have your Mac iCloud enabled.
  • Once iCloud is enabled you need to go straight to ‘System Preferences >> iCloud‘ and check whether the Documents & Data’s option is set to Sync.
  • This process entirely depends on which particular app you are using to push data to iCloud. To push a document to iCloud using the specific app process you need to go to the ‘File >> Move to iCloud‘s structure.
  • Now you have to look for the local folder dedicated to iCloud on your Mac and that is the Library’s folder which is hidden as default in OS X Lion. However, you certainly can get access to it by opening up Finder, highlighting the ‘Go‘ menu option and then clicking on the ‘Alt’ key on the Mac keyboard. This way you make the Library folder visible.
  • Instead of step 4, the other way to do this is to click on ‘⌘CMD + Shift + G’, then type in ‘~/Library/’. In both cases you need to seek a folder in the tree called ‘Mobile Documents’, and then locate the ‘documents’ sub-folder with our precious pushed files.
  • The all-new features coming in the Hazel software help to perform certain synchronizations like making a rule within Hazel that enables checking a particular folder and then syncing the contents to Dropbox. And that results in getting all the iCloud files to Dropbox.

You needn’t worry while using apps that permit just the iCloud storage options as now you can sync iCloud with Dropbox quite easily.

Let me know if you are stuck up and need any assistance.

Tweetbot updated with iCloud integration

I usually don’t write about App Store apps, it’s always about tweaks etc… but this is special. Tweetbot, the best Twitter client for an iPhone, much better even than the Twitter app itself, went through an update and it has added a few cool and unique features.

Tapbot have now added iCloud support to Tweetbot, which will keep the Timeline positions, Direct messages (DMs) and mute filters in sync across all instances of Tweetbot running on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Here are all the new features:

  • iCloud Integration (must be logged into iCloud)
  • Mute filters synced across instances of Tweetbot
  • DM read status synced across all instances of Tweetbot when iCloud is selected for sync
  • Timeline positions are synced, this means that if you scroll on your iPhone and wait for a few second it’ll automatically scroll on your iPad (pretty cool eh?)
  • Better handling of iTunes links across thumbnail previews
  • YouTube links provide thumbnail previews (much awaited)
  • Pinch to close image on iPad
  • Minor bug fixes

It is great to see developers like Tapbots take their apps to the next level using new features available in iOS in their own unique and innovative way. Tweetbot was already the Gold standard for Twitter apps, with the iCloud sync feature, it will be even more difficult for users to give this app a miss.

You can get the updated version from within the AppStore under the updates tab, if you already have purchased it. If not then you will have to purchase it for $2.99 on the iPhone and as well as the iPad.

How to Fix apps stuck on “Waiting…”

After updating to iOS 5.x from iTunes I’ve heard that some people were facing the issue of AppStore apps stuck on waiting for installation. I tried a few thing’s on my friend’s phone and after a few tries it finally worked, so here is a solution to fix this, technically it isn’t a fix but you can say so.

At first I tried the usual reboot and reinstall but that apparently did not work out so eventually I made way into iTunes to see if any podcasts or anything was stuck or if any huge download was stuck… while doing this I got the fix.

As of now I have found only one cause:

  • If you’ve got Automatic Downloads turned on, but have it disabled over 3G; new apps will appear on your springboard with ‘waiting’ until you connect to WiFi or delete them.

I have 3 suggestions for you:

  • Connect to a WiFi and then check if the apps bypass the waiting screen
  • Delete huge apps that provide hindrance to the installation
  • You should pause all the other downloads down to a single app

If the two mentioned up don’t work then you will have to manually delete and re-install all the applications one by one…. (pretty boring huh?)

So those are the solutions to the endless “Waiting…” label under an app.

Let me know which one worked for you in the comments section below.

Review: Angry Birds Space

You might have recently read my post about why I think Angry Birds is one of the best games on iOS. Nearly 2 weeks ago, Angry Birds Space was announced by Rovio and we were even told NASA was involved in it. In my last post about Angry Birds, I said that I didn’t like it because it was the same thing over and over again. Well in Angry Birds Space, that changes.

With Angry Birds Space, the gameplay most have come to love has changed. Now, physics comes into play a lot more with no gravity and gravity affected fields in the levels. As seen in the screenshots above, a lot has changed. The birds got a makeover and there is 1 new bird. That blue squared bird converts blocks into ice.

I encountered some problems with the game. First I couldn’t open it. I somehow fixed that problem but the, while I’m playing it would constantly crash. I was able to solve my problem by deleting the app, re-downloading it and then rebooting. unfortunately, I lost all my data (If you follow me on twitter you could see how mad I was with Rovio).

You can buy Angry Birds space for $0.99 in iTunes. A part of me recommends it because it is fun and the gameplay changed, but another part of me doesn’t recommend it because of all the crashing I got. Let me know how the game plays for you and if you liked it.

Saurik’s warning for playing around with CoreServices

Do you all remember me telling you how to get iPhoto and iMovie working on a device which is running iOS 5.0.1? Well if you haven’t, then check it out, but before you try that out I have a warning for you from the Creator of Cydia – Saurik.

He says that:

Once we change the CoreServices file we enter “game over” and we then need to restore; many things use the firmware version to find out what they need to do at any given moment, or what is compatible with your specific system, and faking it out is going to make all of that unhappy. The people who care about iPhoto on this device should /not/, under any circumstance, be recommending firmware changing behavior: they should write a Substrate extension that modifies the AppStore to bypass this check for this one particular application. In case of a 4S, you can get yourself really really screwed: eventually (after a reboot, upgrade etc.), Cydia is going to notice that you somehow managed to install Corona on a “5.1″ device (which Corona is not compatible with), and it will queue an uninstall of your untether. The next jailbreak the device will not be jailbroken anymore, I am pretty certain absinthe will balk (and even if not, “re-jailbreaking” causes all kinds of other problems), and a restore isn’t possible anymore (unless you want to upgrade to the currently-unjailbreakable 5.1)

Here is the screenshot of another problem caused by this:

In the above image you will see that my phone detects 5.0.1 as the latest software, this s a problem but it can be fixed, so no worries for me or any one of you who are experiencing this, all you have to do is wait for an untethered 5.1 to be RELEASED and then hit restore.

Having read that do you still want to go ahead with that tutorial of mine? if you do please do it at your own risk.

Let me know if any of you guys are already having this trouble.

Tip: Enable Push Notifications in Tweetbot

Tweetbot is, in my opinion, extremely better that Twitter’s official application for iOS. You can do so much more stuff, it has no ads and it even has a prettier UI. Below is a screenshot of my profile in Tweetbot:

Tweetbot, besides being one of the best alternatives to the official twitter app, has one downfall. Push Notifications are not enabled by default and you need to activate them in the app’s settings. Here’s a guide about how to do this:
