Redsn0w updated to 0.9.11b4

A couple of days ago Redsn0w was updated to 0.9.11b3, which I apparently missed out hence I’m covering it here. This update fixed the random “restore failed” messages that Redsn0w gave, it also worked better with the nearby devices that have WiFi syncing enabled.

Now coming back to the latest version of Redsn0w i.e 0.9.11b4. This was released only a few hours back and it completes the tethered jailbreak support for 5.1.1 on A4 devices and earlier, including proper “Stitching” and “Custom” creation of NO_BB IPSWs. This means you will be able to preserve your baseband and update/downgrade (NOTE: Downgrading on A5 devices will still update baseband).

TinyUmbrella updated to 5.11.00b

Notcom a.k.a semaphore has released a new version of TinyUmbrella (5.11.00b) that allows iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users to save SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1.1, that was released by Apple earlier in the week.

TinyUmbrella allows you to take backups of SHSH blobs (ECID SHSH) that can be used to downgrade to older iOS versions even after Apple stops signing the iOS firmware file. It can come in handy if you end up accidentally upgrading to the latest version of iOS.

Until yesterday, it was possible to downgrade only iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, iPod touch 4G and iPod touch 3G from iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1 using the SHSH blobs saved using TinyUmbrella. But iPhone Dev team released a new version of Redns0w yesterday that also allows users to downgrade their iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3.

It’s very simple to save SHSH blobs. All you need to do is follow these steps:

  • Connect your iOS device to the computer
  • Install and then launch the latest version of TinyUmbrella (ensure it says v5.11.00 in the title)
  • Select your iOS device from the “Connected Devices” list
  • Then click on the “Save SHSH” button.

After the SHSH blobs are successfully saved, you should see your iOS device listed along with the iOS version that it is running on currently under the General section, which says Saved SHSHs.

Please note that your iOS device doesn’t need to be on iOS 5.1.1 to save SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1.1, so don’t waste any time and save the SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1.1. It also looks like Apple is still signing iOS 5.1 so you will be able to save SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1 as well, in case you haven’t save them already.

Pod2G Has Untethered His New iPad Running iOS 5.1…

Few days back, pod2g revealed that his untethered jailbreak works on iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.

He has now tweeted that the untethered jailbreak also work on the new iPad (iPad 3,1) running iOS 5.1.

Pod2g just tweeted:

Couple of weeks back, pod2g had revealed that he had discovered 2 big vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1, in addition to the five vulnerabilities that they had discovered earlier. However, he wasn’t sure if the exploits could be used to perform an untethered jailbreak.

But he has managed to successfully jailbreak iPhone 4 and the new iPad (iPad 3,1). It remains to be seen if the untethered jailbreak will also work with iPhone 4S and iPad 2 powered by Apple’s A5 chip, but the fact that it has worked with the new iPad powered by Apple’s A5X chip, it is almost certain that it will work on them as well.

It will also be interesting to see if pod2g’s untethered jailbreak also works on iOS 5.1.1 that was released by Apple earlier in the week. Stefan Esser aka i0n1c who had also managed to jailbreak the new iPad running iOS 5.1, has revealed that his untethered jailbreak works on iOS 5.1.1 as well, though he has categorically stated that he doesn’t plan to release the jailbreak.

Pod2g also tells us that since his untethered jailbreak works on iPhone 4 and iPad 3, it should work with other iOS 5.1 devices like iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as well. But it may not work with Apple TV 3. He tweeted:

i0n1c “Achieves” Another 0day…

iOS Hacker Stefan Esser aka i0n1c who had successfully jailbroken the new iPad running iOS 5.1, has just revealed that has also jailbroken his 4G LTE iPad 3 running iOS 5.1.1.

Along with the tweet he has published a photo, which shows Cydia running on his 4G LTE iPad 3 running iOS 5.1.1.

It means that the exploit he had used for the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 still works with iOS 5.1.1. Unfortunately, don’t get your hopes up as i0n1c has categorically stated that he doesn’t plan to release the untethered jailbreak.

i0n1c later tweets as to why does Cydia show his device as “iPad 3 (AT&T)” :-

BTW You have to blame Saurik for the AT&T stuff in Cydia. He wrongly calls iPad3,3 the iPad3 AT&T.

Pod2g who has been also working on the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 has made quite a lot of progress and had managed to untether jailbreak his iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.
After a few minutes Pimskeks (a member of the jailbreak dream team) tweeted:
Meanwhile, MuscleNerd has revealed that it is still possible to downgrade to iOS 5.0.1 from iOS 5.1.1 using the unreleased method that iH8sn0w had discovered.

5.1.1 shows Apple knows about an unreleased technique to downgrade A5 devices to 5.0.1 with saved blobs (but left it  alone..hmm)

iOS 5.1.1 Released

Apple yesterday released iOS 5.1.1 (build number 9B206).

 

iOS 5.1.1 is available for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation, the original iPad, iPad 2 and the new iPad (iPad 3).

According to the release notes, iOS 5.1.1 includes the following improvements and bug fixes:

  • Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
  • Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
  • Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
  • Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
  • Fixes an issue where ‘Unable to purchase’ alert could be displayed after successful purchase

Unfortunately, there is no mention about bug fixes for battery life issues reported by users.

As usual, jailbreakers should avoid updating to iOS 5.1.1 and also don’t forget to take a backup of SHSH blobs and BBTickets.

How To Use Exposure Lock and Focus With Your iPhone Camera

If you have been using your iPhone’s camera for a while now, then you probably know that tapping once on the screen while taking a picture will make your iPhone automatically focus and adjust exposure to that region, but if you are trying to take a picture with bright lighting or depth conditions the auto focus is not ideal and it does not really give you the image that you can go ahead and upload on Instagram. So, you might be thinking then what should I do? Well here are the steps you should follow to get proper focus and exposure lock to get the exact lighting:

  • Open Camera app and aim it at the object
  • Tap and hold the region of the screen where you want to focus and exposure to be locked onto
  • When “AE/EF Lock” appears on the bottom of the screen, the focus and lighting lock is set

You can take a picture now, but once the lock is set you are free to move the camera around and the lighting and depth settings will stay the same, to release the AE/EF lock, all you have to do is tap on the screen again.

The end result of how a picture comes out can be drastically different, especially in situations where lighting matters. If you see the two images on top the one to the left is with the auto adjustments while the one to the right is with AE?EF Lock enabled. You can see the difference for yourself.

How-To Delete Mail Instead Archiving Them…

If you are a Gmail user and you use the default mail app then you might have noticed that whenever you swipe to delete a mail, instead of “Delete” you will see “Archive”, which does not delete your mail but instead “Archives” it and can be accessed later in the Archives menu.

But there is a way to get rid of this feature and make the delete button as the default.

Here is how to do it:

  • Open Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  • Under “Accounts” you will see your different aliases, tap on the Gmail accounts
  • You will see a toggle “Archive Messages”
  • Just toggle “Archive Messages” to OFF

Once this is done you are good to go. Now if you open the Mail app you and swipe, you will see the “Delete” button comes up instead of “Archive”.

Apple To Launch the new iPad In 21 More Countries…

I have been waiting for this news since March 7 and now finally it is here. Apple has announced that the new iPad will debut in a total of 12 countries this Friday, April 20.

The list of the countries where the new iPad will make a debut is as follows:

Brunei, Croatia, Cyprus, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Malaysia, Panama, South Korea, St. Maarten, Uruguay and Venezuela.

In addition to these 12 countries Apple, will release the new iPad exactly a week later in more 9 countries, which are as follows:

Colombia, Estonia, India, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, South Africa and Thailand.

The new iPad will be available starting at a suggested price of USD 499 for the 16gig WiFi model.

The new iPad will also come with the 4G LTE high-speed wireless Internet, but the aforementioned countries would not be able to enjoy these mind-blowing speed as the new iPad is only compatible with 4G LTE networks in the U.S. and Canada.

Apple has thus far kept its word of having the fastest product roll-out ever. It was released on the 7th of March and since then has been released in over 25 countries and territories.

Review: Curiosa

One of the most awaited tweaks – Curiosa (formerly known as Cydia Bulletin). The tweak was flaunted by Ryan Petrich a long time ago, but it never made it into Cydia for a few reasons, the main one being that it’ll affect the default repos, making the loading slow. But now Curiosa has made it’s way into Cydia and works just as advertised.

 

Curiosa basically notifies you whenever there is an update available for any Cydia tweak that you have installed.

It adds a settings panel which gives you the following options:

1. Automatic Refresh:

  • You can set the duration of when you want Curiosa to check if any update is available under the “When” sub-option.
  • Require Wi-Fi: You can toggle this to on if you want Curiosa to check for updates when you are connected to a Wi-Fi router

2. Manual Refresh:

  • If you choose “Manual” in the “When” option then you will have to set an Activator action, invoking which, will allow Curiosa to check for updates
  • Refresh Now button, on being tapped checks for updates

3. Notification Keywords:

  • It will show update notifications for installed packages and those that match the specified keywords

Tutorial on How To Sync Dropbox and iCloud….

According to TJ Luoma’s report in TUAW, the Mac and iOS users are going to be faced with the problem of choosing between storing their documents in iCloud and Dropbox even though it is known that both have different purpose to serve. Apple as Luoma states is definitely going to add features every now and then to the iCloud so that people opt for it and to make the iCloud easier to win the support of the developers.

Luoma says that he would rather trust Dropbox than iCloud although iCloud is quite good. The reason is that one can sync iCloud with Dropbox but it’s a one-way sync only and of course a simple one too.

How to Sync iCloud With Dropbox

  • To begin with the syncing, you need to have your Mac iCloud enabled.
  • Once iCloud is enabled you need to go straight to ‘System Preferences >> iCloud‘ and check whether the Documents & Data’s option is set to Sync.
  • This process entirely depends on which particular app you are using to push data to iCloud. To push a document to iCloud using the specific app process you need to go to the ‘File >> Move to iCloud‘s structure.
  • Now you have to look for the local folder dedicated to iCloud on your Mac and that is the Library’s folder which is hidden as default in OS X Lion. However, you certainly can get access to it by opening up Finder, highlighting the ‘Go‘ menu option and then clicking on the ‘Alt’ key on the Mac keyboard. This way you make the Library folder visible.
  • Instead of step 4, the other way to do this is to click on ‘⌘CMD + Shift + G’, then type in ‘~/Library/’. In both cases you need to seek a folder in the tree called ‘Mobile Documents’, and then locate the ‘documents’ sub-folder with our precious pushed files.
  • The all-new features coming in the Hazel software help to perform certain synchronizations like making a rule within Hazel that enables checking a particular folder and then syncing the contents to Dropbox. And that results in getting all the iCloud files to Dropbox.

You needn’t worry while using apps that permit just the iCloud storage options as now you can sync iCloud with Dropbox quite easily.
