Safe To Update to iOS 5.1.1, says Pod2g!

Now that it has been confirmed that the pod2g’s untethered jailbreak is almost ready and works with most iOS devices (except Apple TV 3) running iOS 5.1.1, he has tweeted that it is safe for jailbreakers to update their iOS devices to iOS 5.1.1.

But pod2g has warned users who depend on Ultrasn0w to unlock their iPhone should avoid updating to iOS 5.1.1.

Absinthe 2.0 or upcoming version of Redsn0w won’t support iOS 5.1, so if users want to jailbreak their iOS device, then they will have upgrade to iOS 5.1.1.

Pod2g tweeted:

Some facts about 5.1.1 jailbreak : http://t.co/Tk6Rrpow . You can safely upgrade to 5.1.1 now if you want to be ready.

Huge warning as usual for unlockers that want to preserve their baseband to keep their unlock.

So who should upgrade to iOS 5.1.1:

  • Users who don’t care about unlocking their iPhone

If you care about unlocking, then you should wait for iPhone Dev team to release Redsn0w which supports the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak. You to create a custom iOS 5.1.1 firmware file using the upcoming version of Redsn0w, that will allow you to update to iOS 5.1.1 without updating your iPhone’s baseband.

  • Users who don’t care about losing the jailbreak

If you have a jailbroken iOS device and don’t want to lose your jailbreak by updating it to iOS 5.1.1 then you should wait for Absinthe 2.0 or Redsn0w to be released.

If you do decide to upgrade to iOS 5.1.1, remember to first:

  • Ensure that you’ve backed up your iOS device either to iTunes or iCloud
  • Take a backup of SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella before upgrading and then after upgrading to iOS 5.1.1

Pod2g and iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak team are widely expected to release the untethered jailbreak sometime this week. We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve any further updates.

The Dev Team Will Also Release Redsn0w and CLI for Upcoming 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak

The demo video of Absinthe 2.0 – untethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch running on iOS 5.1.1 that was briefly available, provided some interesting details of what to expect.

MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team has just provided some more information about the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

He has published the following notes on his website:

All info below is tentative and subject to last minute refinements

  • @pod2g’s 5.1.1 jailbreak+untether is working out great. All devices are covered except for AppleTV3,1, which currently has no path for jailbreaking.
  • the initial 5.1.1 plan used a kernel exploit from @westbaer which unfortunately precluded use in iPod3,1 and iPhone2,1
  • @planetbeing stepped up and provided a kernel exploit that covers both of those. Those two JBers are the bomb!
  • The 5.1.1 A5 JB is very similar to the A5 5.0.1 JB. @pimskeks has done a tremendous job supporting both 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 in absinthe
  • Similar to 5.0.1, there will also be a 5.1.1 CLI “cinject” binary and redsn0w version of the 5.1.1 JB+untether. Absinthe, cinject, and redsn0w will all provide the same JB in different fashions.
  • timing is indeterminate. Plans are for this week, but a number of factors can influence that.
Users who depend on Ultrasn0w to unlock their iPhone, will have to use Redsn0w rather than Absinthe 2.0 or the Redsn0w command line interface tool, as it allows users to create custom iOS firmware files to preserve the baseband.
MuscleNerd has also requested users planning to use the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak NOT TO pirate App Store apps. Jailbreaking has got a bad name due to piracy and we really hope that users jailbreak their devices to customize their iOS devices using some of the cool jailbreak apps and tweaks available on Cydia, rather than pirating apps from the App Store.

iOS 5.1.1 Untether Jailbreak Only a Matter Of Days Now…

Yes folks you read it right, the 5.1.1 jailbreak is now only a few days away from being publicly released. Pod2g the brain behind most of the recent jailbreaks has once again with the help of pimskeks and planetbeing managed to achieve another jailbreak which can be publicly released.

A few moments ago he tweeted:

Previously he had said it would take a couple of weeks and apparently he is sticking to his word of the ETA. We might see the jailbreak being released at the Hack In The Box conference in Amsterdam but nothing is confirmed.

Anyway that is all the news for now. If you want to check whether your device is supported by this exploit you can do so here.

Are you excited about the release?

List of 5.1.1 Jailbreakable Devices Updated…

Some good news for iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G users. Few days back, pod2g had said that his untethered jailbreak did not work with iPod touch 3G on iOS 5.1.1 and hence also may not work with iPhone 3GS.

But he has just tweeted that they’ve figured out a way to jailbreak iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G as well.

He tweeted:

Good news. We’ve found a way through for iPod 3G and iPhone 3Gs users. Upcoming jailbreak will be compatible.

So based on that update, pod2g’s has tested and confirmed that his untethered jailbreak works on the following iOS devices:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPad 1
  • iPad 2 Wi-Fi
  • iPad 3 Wi-Fi
  • iPad 3 Wi-Fi + 4G (CDMA)
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
His iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak currently does not work on Apple TV 3. Here is the list of devices, he still needs to test and confirm if it works on them:
  • iPhone 3Gs
  • iPad 2 GSM
  • iPad 2 CDMA
  • iPad 2 Wifi, R2
  • iPad 3 CDMA
  • iPad 3 Global
  • AppleTV 2
Earlier in the week, pod2g announced that it will take two weeks to release the user friendly tool to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 devices. It remains to be seen if pod2g and Chronic Dev team will release the jailbreak at the Hack in the Box conference that starts on Monday, May 21st, where they will be presenting as they have hinted of some jailbreak goodness during the event.

List Of 5.1.1 Jailbreakable Devices…

Here is some interesting news regarding the iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak. Pod2g the one who is actively working on releasing the jailbreak has updated his blog with a new post in which he tells us all the devices on which his untethered jailbreak will work.

You can check out all the devices on which the jailbreak exploit will work here.

It is interesting to note that the jailbreak will not work with three dives namely:

  1. iPhone 3GS
  2. iPod 3G
  3. AppleTV 3

What are your thoughts on this?

What news related to jailbreaking could pod2g be talking about?

The video that pod2g released showing off the iPad 3 untethered jailbreak also had some exciting news. In the credits, pod2g said that the jailbreak tool will be created and released by the chronic-dev team.

Earlier today he updated his blog that some interesting news regarding jailbreaking were going to be announced in the hack-in-the-box conference.

This leaves me wondering, what could the news be?! Could this mean that in less than 11 days the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak will be here, or better yet, a bootrom exploit has been found for A5/X devices has been found? Another possibility is Jailbreakme 4.0 and/or a hard to patch exploit.

Pod2G Has Untethered His New iPad Running iOS 5.1…

Few days back, pod2g revealed that his untethered jailbreak works on iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.

He has now tweeted that the untethered jailbreak also work on the new iPad (iPad 3,1) running iOS 5.1.

Pod2g just tweeted:

Couple of weeks back, pod2g had revealed that he had discovered 2 big vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1, in addition to the five vulnerabilities that they had discovered earlier. However, he wasn’t sure if the exploits could be used to perform an untethered jailbreak.

But he has managed to successfully jailbreak iPhone 4 and the new iPad (iPad 3,1). It remains to be seen if the untethered jailbreak will also work with iPhone 4S and iPad 2 powered by Apple’s A5 chip, but the fact that it has worked with the new iPad powered by Apple’s A5X chip, it is almost certain that it will work on them as well.

It will also be interesting to see if pod2g’s untethered jailbreak also works on iOS 5.1.1 that was released by Apple earlier in the week. Stefan Esser aka i0n1c who had also managed to jailbreak the new iPad running iOS 5.1, has revealed that his untethered jailbreak works on iOS 5.1.1 as well, though he has categorically stated that he doesn’t plan to release the jailbreak.

Pod2g also tells us that since his untethered jailbreak works on iPhone 4 and iPad 3, it should work with other iOS 5.1 devices like iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as well. But it may not work with Apple TV 3. He tweeted:

And finally here is the video by Pod2G showing off his untethered iPad 3:

Update: Untether 5.1 Jailbreak Achieved By Pod2g

Yes folks, what you read in the title is absolutely correct, Pod2g has done it again.

A few moments ago he tweeted that has managed to perform an untethered jailbreak on his iPhone 4 on iOS 5.1.

He said:

Earlier in the week, pod2g had revealed that he had discovered 2 big vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1, in addition to the five vulnerabilities that they had discovered earlier. However, he wasn’t sure if the exploits could be used to perform an untethered jailbreak. This means that you won’t need to connect your jailbroken iPhone on iOS 5.1 to the computer on every reboot.

But not surprisingly, he has managed to successfully jailbreak his iPhone 4 on iOS 5.1. It remains to be seen if the untethered jailbreak will also work with iPhone 4S and the new iPad.

We do not know if we will see a public release of this jailbreak, it all depends on the poll created by Pod2g on his blog.

Update: iOS 5.1 Jailbreak

Few days back, pod2g had revealed that they had discovered 5 exploits that were required for the iOS 5.1 jailbreak.

Pod2g has some more good news, he has just tweeted that he has discovered 2 more big vulnerabilities over the weekend.

He just tweeted the following update:

Just a few moments after that he tweeted that:

The reason of the second tweet by Pod2g is the recent tension between i0n1c and him regarding wether jailbreak exploits should be free or not.

Pod2g had also posted a poll asking users if they should hold off the jailbreak for iOS 6 to be released or release a jailbreak for iOS 5.1 as soon as possible, which would mean that the exploits used for the jailbreak would be patched by Apple in iOS 6 or in the next iOS software update. With 2 days still to go for the poll, it looks like majority of the users (61% of the 135,961 votes and counting) want pod2g and team to release a jailbreak for iOS 5.1 as soon as possible.

The ideal situation would be if the hackers don’t have to use all the 7 exploits discovered so far for the iOS 5.1 jailbreak and the exploits that are not used are enough for the next jailbreak. So it remains to be seen if the two big vulnerabilities that pod2g has discovered over the weekend can be used for future jailbreaks.

If you haven’t voted, I highly recommend you to go ahead and cast your vote on pod2g’s website.

What do you guys make of this?

Update: iOS 5.1 Jailbreak

If you’re eagerly waiting for pod2g to release the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 then you need to be patient as pod2g has tweeted that he can’t provide an ETA currently.

Pod2g has been making quite a bit progress in jailbreaking iOS 5.1. Last week, he reported that he had all the exploits for iOS 5.1 jailbreak and even managed to bypass ASLR.

However, it looks like there is still quite a bit of work to be done as has just tweeted:

ETA for 5.1 JB: no clue! We’re going to set pieces of the puzzle together this week. We could have issues… Could be 1 month maybe 2…

Maybe never… (!)

I know 1 month seems long, but it’s short to work on a project like this when it’s a hobby and you’ve other things to do as well.

So please be patient and don’t complain or ask him about the jailbreak progress on Twitter,  we’ll let you know as soon as there are any further updates.
